Sport and Co-curricular
St Andrew’s Cathedral School offers an extensive and dynamic sport and co-curricular programme that encourages students to discover their passions and pursue excellence.
Key sports include Football, Hockey, Netball, Basketball, Tennis, Volleyball, Touch Football, Rock Climbing, Cricket and Squash.
Beyond the field, our co-curricular opportunities are equally diverse, with options such as Debating, Philosophy, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Makerspace, Design and Technology, Fashion, and Robotics — each designed to challenge, inspire, and develop a wide range of skills and interests.

Junior School and Gawura School
Our Kindergarten to Year 6 sport programme focuses on the development of fundamental movement skills. It aims to build on the programmes offered in previous years, utilising various facilities in the school and city for both summer and winter.
Our Kindergarten to Year 2 programme focuses upon the development and consolidation of Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS), providing the students with a skill set that will serve them well in future physical activity. Students are involved in a variety of different activities across the year aiming to build their physical skills, social awareness and game sense in an enjoyable and fun focused environment.
We are part of All Suburbs Independent School Sport Association (ASISSA) and the IPSHA Sporting Association for students in Years 3 to 6 to compete against other schools on a weekly basis in seasonal sports. Through our inter-school sport programme, students learn less tangible skills, such as resilience, teamwork and humility in a safe and supportive environment. We have a fine reputation for sporting success and attitude, which is reflected in each student’s skill development, enthusiasm, encouragement of others and conduct.
All sports, competitive and non-competitive, are fully supervised. We also have three major carnivals throughout the year. All students (Years 3 to 6) are expected to participate at the School’s Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals. There are opportunities for students to move on to representative carnivals and compete at state and even national levels!

Year 7 students also have the option of participating in a summer sport which will run from mid-August 2026 through to mid-March in 2027. It is extremely unusual for a Year 7 student to participate in the ongoing summer season in Term 1 but from time-to-time players are invited to join a team – usually to address a player shortage.
Students in Years 8 to 11
Students in Years 8 to 11 in 2026 are required to participate in either a winter sport or a summer sport. While these students can participate in both seasons of sport, the compulsory obligation only requires participation in one season.

General information
Communication and Systems
Most of the communication regarding SACS sport in the secondary school is done using Stacks TeamApp. Sport convenors will provide details to parents and students of how to access the relevant TeamApp after registration in the sport. Limited information about sports (training times, teams, match details) will also be able to be accessed through the St Andrew’s Cathedral School app.
Training
The commitment of each sport varies from sport-to-sport but most students are likely to be engaged in a sport which has weekday training after school along with Saturday competition. The majority of Middle School training is held on a Tuesday afternoon with Senior College training predominantly being on a Thursday afternoon. A teams or Firsts teams usually have an additional Monday afternoon session.
While the majority of training follows the above pattern, there are exceptions because training sessions are subject to field/court availability (some training is held before school); the size of a sport might require mean less training days (some sports do not train on a Monday but train on both Tuesday and Thursday) and; off-day training is also held in some instances (some sports train on a Wednesday).
Venues
Our key sporting locations include Wentworth Park, Sydney University and the Centennial Park/Moore Park precinct but a range of other venues are used. Visit our website for more information on our facilities.
Transport
For most sports bus transport is provided from the school to training venues, returning to the school afterwards. However, depending on the venue some training may be accessed on foot or through the use of public transport.
On Saturdays if the sports venue is within the Sydney metro area, students will be required to make their own way to and from the venue. For sporting events outside Sydney Metro area (for example, Bowral, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, and Bathurst) the school provides bus transport to and from the venue for students and staff.
Fitness Centre
St Andrew’s Cathedral School has an up to date fitness centre located within the Sports Centre (ground floor SAH). This is open for all students to use before (6-8am) and after school (3.30-5.30pm) everyday. This facility is also open in selected times during the school holidays. There are dedicated staff available to cater for all students and provide them with personalised training programmes to ensure that all students achieve their goals.
High-Performance Athlete Development Programme
The High-Performance Athlete Development Programme (HPADP) at St Andrew’s Cathedral School (SACS) is an innovative initiative designed to nurture student-athletes with the potential to excel at an elite level. Built on the principle of holistic development, the programme integrates both academic and athletic pursuits, ensuring that students are supported in balancing the dual demands of education and sport. By embedding a structured support system, the HPADP fosters an environment where athletes can thrive across multiple dimensions of their lives, from the classroom to the sporting field. Through its comprehensive offerings, the HPADP provides tailored support that includes one-on-one mentoring, sport education programmes, mental performance coaching, and access to high-performance service providers. The programme also establishes strong partnerships with national, state, and professional sporting organisations to create meaningful pathways for advancement. Targeting student-athletes from Year 5 to Year 12, its primary purpose is to deliver the tools, guidance, and opportunities necessary to elevate performance while maintaining academic success. In doing so, the HPADP positions SACS as a leader in school-based athlete development.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a leading structured (non-formal education) youth development programme, empowering all young Australians aged 14 -24 to explore their full potential and find their purpose, passion and place in the world, regardless of their location or circumstance. The Award is a fully inclusive programme and has no social, political, or religious affiliations. At St Andrew’s, students are invited to join the Award as soon as they turn 14, or from the beginning of Term 4, in Year 8.
For more information regarding the Duke of Edinburgh Award please contact our St Andrew’s Cathedral School Award Coordinator: Michele Hall – mhall@sacs.nsw.edu.au.
Tours
St Andrew’s Cathedral School throughout its history has embarked on tours throughout the world. These have included Choir, Music, Outdoor Education, Language, Sport and subject based tours. These tours provide opportunities to extend the students breadth of knowledge, experience, world understanding and an immersion into cultural diversity.
Along with the actual learning that occurs there is something immeasurable about time away with peers and those in year levels above and below that adds to the experience that students receive. The provision of opportunities for students to participate in experiences in the wider community, national and international settings is a means of reinforcing and supplementing the curriculum offerings of the School and of enriching the student’s personal development.
Students can actually see and enrich their knowledge of places and people they’ve learned about in the classroom. They gain a deeper understanding of real-life situations and trends more so than a book can ever convey.
Along with professional skill development, students also have the chance to try out the languages they’ve studied with native speakers. They can build independence and confidence as they explore new places and local customs.
Perhaps most important of all, students gain new insights into their own culture, their place in the world, how privileged they are and come away with a more global perspective.
Tours contribute immensely to the general tone and fabric of our school. The comprehensive tour programme incorporates both domestic and international tours. These tours operate across year groups and through various departments including History, Music, Drama, Sport, Outdoor Education, Community Service and Languages.
